SES I.P.R. Acquisition

Stoner Engineering Software (SES) Intellectual Property Rights (I.P.R.) are For Sale by Acquisition

Good software just runs and tasks get done — it could last for generations.

#1 Choice for ~Decade — SES Historical Snapshot

Not too long ago SES geosteering software use garnered about half of U.S.A. land rigs drilling horizontally. Simultaneous performance records were 121 client companies of all sizes and 494 funded licenses; with users often servicing multiple rigs/license. More than 265 client companies would become reached. Competition, game-changing features/platforms/re-writes that arrived too late, and inadequate marketing chipped away at dominance. In the end, while software leadership can change as markets will do, SES 3D steering technologies fundamentally supersede 2D-projection approaches — a logical fact with no expiry and no workaround besides copy.

Who SHOULD purchase SES I.P.R.? Potential buyers are described below.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.) What's a motivation behind the Buyer Type 1 offering? An SES open source freeware project would enable Stoner and industry with an incremental win-win "Exit" alongside earned legacy and long-lasting benefits for most. Before SES, geosteering consulting services and software were closely held. SES use/training/videos disrupted the market by actively spreading brand new craft to geologist masses. Open source funding could trigger good disruption to "creep-in yet again" by — directly & indirectly, immediately & over time — permanently privatizing some geosteering software use.

2.) What are the Asks? With speculation towards acquisition details, $3.95M for Buyer Type 1 (OPEN SOURCE FREEWARE), or $5.95M for Buyer Type 2 (EXCLUSIVE).

3.) As one of 10,000+ O&G Companies, why should we write a check to fund SES Open Source Freeware? Coding SES was a massive undertaking and spanned ~two decades. It contains lots of general and O&G-specific parts. Complex entire-app working code examples eventually fuel countless solutions to tasks that benefit operators in perpetuity. SES still reigns at handling technical geosteering for "3D" wellpaths, such as landings with azimuthal turn or HAHZ hole sections with major turn—a shining example being a U-turn lateral. Freeware could easily be applied independently or in tandem, whenever it makes sense. Industry net future geosteering software costs could very likely go down.

4.) What open source projects took very complex software costs to zero for some? In 2021, we moved our entire internet presence and related means of communication — web|email|ftp|etc. — to Linux open source and then fired all prior service providers saving thousands per year ever since. While storage/bandwidth expense is unavoidable, *software* costs were/are zero. Meaningful open source projects often require a kick-start. With geosteering software being such a niche market, capital over sweat is justified to grease the skids and move a massive code amount into the open for future communal involvement.

5.) May we submit a NON-BINDING PLEDGE of SUPPORT to join other Member "Type 1" (OPEN SOURCE FREEWARE) Buyers? Sure. Please call or use our contact form with a bona fide O&G business email address domain.

6.) Would Stoner consider serving on a board and/or consulting to assist with SES technology transfer? Yes.

7.) Could Microsoft Access tables be migrated to Azure SQL or SQL Server tables, allowing for improved performance, scalability, and support for more concurrent users running a rich desktop Access app like SES? Yes, in theory, but it's more difficult to simultaneously support both types of backend especially as an external vendor. Open source plus community/industry participation could produce amazing cost-effective outcomes as has similarly been done in other industries.

8.) What will change with SES Licensing after an SES I.P.R. Acquisition? It depends on Buyer Type, but rest assured change if any will honor existing agreements and more.

9.) May we see "examples" that convey a sense of scope to SES as written in Microsoft VBA, as well as a sample of Stoner's general coding style? Yes. Click here to see the SES "v5" Microsoft Access relational database structure. Click here to see an "export listing" of 159 Microsoft Access module, form, and report object names and the number of LINES OF CODE behind each that altogether define SES. Click here to see the "Form_Load()" event of the "money screen" known as ParamTuner, to see a coding style snippet sample.
